How to set up your account backup?

Keep a safe copy of your content - choose what Spikerz backs up, read your storage usage, and download your archive.

Written by Ron Storfer

Introduction

Backup is your safety net for content. Spikerz keeps its own copy of what your connected accounts publish, so that if an account is hacked, suspended, or deleted - or if a single post or story disappears - the content still exists somewhere you control.

The feature lives on the Backup your social media page, and is organized into two tabs:

  • Settings - which content types Spikerz backs up automatically

  • Storage - what has been backed up, how much space it uses, and where you download it from

Backups run automatically. Once a content type is switched on, there is nothing to trigger manually - this guide covers how to shape what is collected, how to read your storage, and how to get the archive out.

Before You Start

Make sure that:

  • The account is connected and its token is valid. Spikerz can only back up what it can see. A disconnected asset is not being backed up - see Token Inventory (Asset Management).

  • You know what the platform supports. Backup coverage differs from network to network - see What Can Be Backed Up, Per Platform below.

  • You have checked which permissions were granted. Content types depend on the scopes approved when the account was connected - see the Spikerz Platform Permissions Guide.

Step 1: Choose What Gets Backed Up

Open the Settings tab. Under Shape your backup to fit your account needs, each content type has its own toggle. Activating a toggle enables automatic backup for that type - Spikerz then keeps collecting it in the background, with no further action from you.

The Content Types

  • Posts - archives your profile's photos and videos, capturing the essence of your shared visual content.

  • Messages - archives your conversations, including direct messages, shared links, and attachments. This service is available only on Facebook and Instagram.

  • Stories - archives story content. This is the toggle worth paying the most attention to: the platforms themselves delete stories after 24 hours, so a Spikerz backup is often the only copy that survives.

Note: turning a toggle off stops Spikerz collecting new items of that type. Content that has already been backed up stays in your storage and remains downloadable.

Recommendation: leave every toggle your platform supports switched on. The cost of a backup you did not need is storage; the cost of one you did not take is content you cannot get back.

Step 2: Check Your Backup Status

Open the Storage tab. This is where you confirm the backup is actually running, and see what it has collected.

How to Read This Page

  • Last backup - the date of the most recent successful run. This is your health check: if the date is older than you would expect, start with the troubleshooting section below.

  • Storage usage - how much of your total allowance is still free, shown as available out of total.

  • The breakdown bar - how that space is divided between content types. Each type shows the number of items backed up and the share of your total storage they occupy. In the example above, 4,126 posts account for 19.03% of storage while 1,200 messages account for only 1% - text-based content is far cheaper to keep than video.

  • Download backup - retrieves your archive, covered in the next step.

Step 3: Download Your Backup

Select Download backup on the Storage tab to retrieve your archived content.

Downloads are metered. The line beneath the button tracks how many you have used against your monthly allowance - "You have used 1 out of 2 downloads this month" in the example above. The counter resets at the start of each month, so treat downloads as something to plan rather than something to click twice for the same archive.

When to Take a Download

  • Before removing an asset from Spikerz. Removing an asset permanently deletes its data from the workspace - take the archive first.

  • Before a rebrand, migration, or account handover, so the old content survives the change.

  • During an incident, when legal, comms, or your SOC needs the content as it stood.

  • As a periodic off-platform copy, kept wherever your organization keeps its records.

What Can Be Backed Up, Per Platform

Backup coverage depends on what each network's API exposes. A content type that is not supported will simply stay empty for that account.

Good to Know

  • Backup follows the connection. If an asset's token is revoked or expires, backup pauses along with the rest of monitoring, and resumes when the asset is reconnected. Content published during the gap may not be recoverable afterwards.

  • Storage is finite. Video-heavy content consumes the allowance fastest. Watch the usage bar rather than waiting to be told it is full.

  • Messages are Facebook and Instagram only. The toggle exists for every account, but has nothing to collect elsewhere.

  • Downloads are capped per month. Take the archive once and store it, rather than re-downloading.

  • Backup is not analytics. It preserves your content - it does not report on performance.

Troubleshooting

"Last backup" is older than you expect

  1. Check the account is still connected. A disconnected asset is not being backed up - see Token Inventory (Asset Management).

  2. Check the toggles on the Settings tab. If every type is off, there is nothing to collect.

  3. Check your storage. An allowance with no room left cannot take new content.

  4. Contact Spikerz support with the asset name and the date shown, if all three look correct.

A content type shows nothing

Either the platform does not support that type - check the table above - or its toggle is off. Messages in particular will stay empty on anything other than Facebook and Instagram.

Storage is nearly full

Download the archive and store it outside Spikerz, then turn off any content type you do not need going forward. If your accounts genuinely need more room, talk to Spikerz support about your allowance.

You cannot download

Check the counter beneath the button - if the monthly allowance is used up, the next download becomes available at the start of the next month. If the counter shows downloads remaining and the archive still will not build, contact Spikerz support.
